Time for another adventure. This time, I’m off to the Dominican Republic with Compassion Canada. I have a new sponsored child, a 15-year-old boy in the Dominican who I’m expecting to meet and be able to spend some time with him and his mom. I have a whole bag and a bit more of gifts for him and other children in the DR and I’m hoping Eduardo and his mom will really like and need the things I’m bringing for them.
I’m writing this at the Ottawa airport as I await my plane to Toronto where, tomorrow morning, I will meet up with 28 other Compassion sponsors and head out early to the DR, arriving about 12:45 their time. There is an hour difference between the DR and Ottawa but the biggest difference will be the weather — mid- to high 20s Celsius and no snow for the next 8 days. Looking forward to that, for sure!
This trip has been in the works for several months but has arrived so quickly that I can’t believe I’m heading out already. Even more incredible that I will meet my new sponsor child (who I’m pretty sure is taller than me from the picture I have) and learn a whole bunch more about Compassion Canada. I have lots of questions and am looking forward to seeing their Child Education Centres, their headquarters, and the cultural and economic environment they are having to combat in order to end child poverty. I’m also looking forward to playing (or watching) the children play baseball. In one of my bags I have some gently used ball gloves for younger children and a brand new 13″ glove for Eduardo, who, I’m told, loves sports.
Can’t tell you too much more at this point except that it’s hard to stay calm and I’m hoping to be able to share lots of pictures and stories about this latest adventure. Next post will probably be from the DR. Cheers!
